The Southeastern metro fiber builder and operator FiberLight has been busy working on a large Texas expansion for a year now, but this week the project more than doubled in scope.  With additional anchor tenants in place, FiberLight announced Monday that it has added 4,500 regional and metro route miles of dark fiber to its buildout plans, bringing the total planned footprint to above 9,000 route miles in Texas alone. Multiple reports out of Europe have the likes of FT, DT, Telecom Italia, and Telefonica sitting down to discuss the pooling of their network infrastructure. In a move that I did not expect, DISH has apparently made a competing bid for clwr. Yep, Clearwire says it has received an ‘unsolicited, non-binding proposal from DISH’ for $3.30 per share, attempting to take the prize away from Softbank/Sprint whose bid of $2.97 now stands in question. nflx offered an update on the content delivery network it started work on last year, which goes by the name “OpenConnect”. It places caches deep within last mile networks in an effort to give them better control over both quality and traffic management in order to defuse some of the usual OTT friction. They seem to be making substantial progress in winning over last mile operators, and today claimed Cablevision as a new convert. [Read more →]

It looks as if the long discussed buyout of Vodafone’s 45% minority stake in Verizon Wireless may be back on the front burner. Yesterday, CEO Lowell McAdam went as far as to tell the Wall Street Journal that such a deal is currently “feasible” and that they would still love to own the whole business. He also said that Verizon’s growing wireline strength was making it easier to put together such a deal. [Read more →]
