EXA Infrastructure has added an interesting new longhaul route to its European network. They have built out a new terrestrial link between the Spanish markets of Barcelona and Bilbao.
Each of those markets is also home to a subsea cable landing ecosystem, one on the Mediterranean and one on the Atlantic. That will allow transatlantic traffic to quickly hop over to the subsea links reaching into the Middle East, cutting latency on cross-Spain traffic by some 52%.
The result is a new corridor for traffic that bypasses major European bottlenecks and adds diversity to the global ecosystem. The route also serves the Zaragoza region itself, connecting eight main data centers across Catalonia more directly to North America, and will help power data center development in the Aragón region as well..
The project was backed by major investments by AWS, Microsoft, and QTS.
