Fiber Bytes: Lumen, NMFN, Empire Fiber, Race Communications

Four bits of fiber expansion news from around the US to catch up on:

Lumen has announced cloud networking access beyond its own fiber footprint. They have expanded access to the company’s Multi-Cloud Gateway service, allowing 10M US businesses to access it via third party connected locations. The idea is to extend connectivity to cloud and of course AI assets to a wider audience using the same cloud networking environment they would use at a Lumen on-net site.

NM Fiber Network has tapped Fujitsu’s 1Finity to help with its middle mile network expansion. They will be deploying 1Finity’s IPoDWDM technology on their infrastructure as they integrate disparate networks across the state into a cohesive system. We had NMFN here for a spotlight last summer to talk about the regional project, which brings together a dozen or so regional providers in a state that rarely gets much infrastructure love.

Empire Fiber has been busy in Ithaca NY, the home of Cornell University in the Finger Lakes region of New York. They have expanded their last mile services into the Collegetown, Bryant Park, and Belle Sherman parts of town. The regional fiber operator has expanded service to some 700 additional homes, giving them 5400 homes and businesses passed.

And Race Communications has unveiled plans to add another California market to its portfolio. They are moving into the City of Dinuba, which sits a bit southeast of the city of Fresno in the state’s Central Valley. They will be targeting 4,000 homes and businesses, which is part of the $200M or so they are investing in expansion in 2025 across the state. Race now has 50+ markets online.
