Int’l Bytes: Telxius, Broadpeak, Ciena, Telstra, Spark

Two from Latin America and two from Down Under:

Telxius is adding to its depth in the Caribbean. They have built a new carrier neutral facility in Cancun, Mexico that will serve as both a landing gateway and an edge data center. It will have direct access to the Tikal cable, which connects to Boca Raton FL and to Puerto Barrios in Guatemala, and provide an alternate route to Santiago de Querétaro. Tikal will launch in the first half of 2027 with capacity of 380Tbps.

Broadpeak is expanding its CDN-as-a-Service infrastructure down in Brazil. They are adding seven new HyperPoPs across the country, each providing some 1Tbps of capacity. The expansion will increase performance and capacity of Broadpeak’s infrastructure in Latin America. Broadpeak rolled out new HyperPoPs in England, Switzerland, Greece, and Mexico in 2025. YouCast will handle the Brazilian deployment.

And Ciena announced both a successful trial and a customer deployment down in the southern hemisphere. In Australia they have successfully demonstrated a 1.6Tbps transmission over 1,100km, transporting four 400GbE client services over a single wavelength. The demo leveraged Ciena’s WL6e technology on L-band spectrum Telstra’s live production network between Melbourne and Sydney.

Meanwhile, in New Zealand Spark will be using Ciena’s gear to scale data center connectivity across Auckland. Spark is launching a dedicated DCI service using Ciena’s WL6e coherent technology and related capabilities. The new service will enable regional facilities to connect at speeds from 10G to 800G. Initial coverage will extend from Silverdale to Papakura.
