Long term deals for massive amounts of fiber seem to be a thing this year, and Corning is certainly enjoying it. Yesterday Verizon and Corning announced a multi-year, multi-billion dollar supply agreement targeting demand over the next six years or so.
The agreement will secure more than 80 million miles of high density optical fiber from 2027 through 2032. Verizon will use that for both expansion of its business and residential fiber reach and for the next generation of longhaul connectivity demanded by the explosion of AI.
On the last mile component, Verizon says it is pushing toward 40-50 million passings, while for AI they will be targeting “near-zero latency and massive throughput” in support of LLMs with new ultra-dense cables along major longhaul corridors..
If this sounds familiar, it was just 3 weeks ago that Zayo announced a similar long term deal for Corning’s fiber as it targets new backbone expansions and overbuilds for AI. And of course NVIDIA did a long term deal with Corning back in May that will add 50% to Corning’s fiber production capacity.
