Metro Bytes: Uniti, GPC, Comcast Business, Fibwi

Four bits of last mile news of interest to keep up with:

Uniti Group has won a hyperscale contract that will pull them deeper into Huntsville AL. The company plans to build out 70 route miles in the city under a 20 year deal for both conduit and high-strand count fiber. Uniti is already in Huntsville of course, but will be able to connect additional key data centers and interconnect with diverse longhaul fiber infrastructure.

Great Plains Communications has won some state dollars in support of more last mile fiber. They have picked up $3.54M as a winning bidder in a reverse auction held by the Nebraska Public Service Commission. That will go toward connecting 310 households in unserved areas in the towns of Columbus, Hebron, Kearney, Madison, Mead, Monroe, Nebraska City, Palmer, Seward and Superior.

Comcast Business won a bit of business in the Connecticut beer scene recently. Thimble Island Brewing Company will use their Ethernet Dedicated Internet at both its primary Branford location and a new one they are opening in Old Saybrook. They’ll use that network infrastructure for cloud connectivity in support of operations of the brewery and brewpub.

And Spain’s Balearic Islands are about to get symmetrical 10Gbps to the home. The network operator Fibwi has tapped Slovenia’s Kontron for €5M worth of XGS-PON gear, specifically the Iskratel Lumia T14. They plan to connect 200K homes in the islands, with starting with 100K on Mallorca. That’s a sizeable chunk of the market, as the Balearic Islands have a population of just under 1.2M.
