Four interesting expansion and upgrade projects from around the US:
Lumen and Microsoft are expanding their collaboration when it comes to supporting AI with networking. The two will be co-selling enterprise AI-ready networks in support of Azure cloud deployments. They will also be looking for additional ways to leverage Lumen’s network infrastructure within Microsoft’s marketplace more broadly over time.
Bluebird Fiber has unveiled a new optical transport and IP backbone architecture that it calls Tera-Core. It combines colorless, gridless DWDM technology with a terabit-capable IP/MPLS core, and will eventually support expansion into L-band spectrum as well. That will support demand for 400G links with a path to 800G and beyond.
Hotwire Communications has tapped Nokia to deploy nextgen infrastructure in North Carolina. The new AI-fabric-ready infrastructure is aimed at preparing for future traffic demands, and will leverage Nokia’s 7750SR technology. Hotwire Communications operates last mile and middle mile fiber in both Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, and Texas as well as a few bits beyond that.
And Equinix has been busy out in the Chicago suburbs. They have invested $215M into their CH5 IBX in Elk Grove Village, which is just west of Chicago O’Hare. The project has added 150 local jobs during construction and 50 or so more permanently. The facility will add 190,000 square feet of olo space when complete. Equinix has also been working with community organizations for education and entrepreneurship.
