Wednesday Bytes: NTT, Airtel, Telesonic, CityFibre, Astound, Ciena

A new data center campus, a new wholesale fiber unit, some last mile fiber, and a network upgrade:

NTT is taking aim at Paris with a major new data center campus. They have lined up 35.5 acres of land about 50km south or the city in Le Coudray-Montceaux and Corbeil-Essonnes. Their plans call for three data centers totaling some 84MW of critical IT load. The additional infrastructure will complement their existing presence in London, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam, completing the final piece of the FLAP loop.

Africa now has a new wholesale fiber option. Airtel Africa has launched a new company, Africa Telesonic Limited. Telesonic will manage some 75,000km of terrestrial fiber across 14 countries. This follows a parallel move by Airtel Africa in which they launched Nxtera in the African data center space.

In the UK, CityFibre has polished off another buildout, this time in Northampton. It was a £40m project started more than four years ago in which they have built out 732km of infrastructure connecting some 87,700 homes. With the primary build complete, CityFibre will still have plenty of work to do to reach additional targets in the region.

And Ciena’s WL5e coherent optics will be getting a workout at Astound Business Solutions. Astound will be rolling out commercial 400G wavelengths on its 41,000 route miles of fiber across the US, with a pathway to 800G of course. The bigger pipes will enable them to meet the demands of larger enterprise, carrier, and government clients. Astound has some 75K business customers.
