Network Roundup: Arelion, MOX, RETN, Aqua Comms

Two interesting expansion projects, a significant upgrade project, and some bit R&E bandwidth:

Arelion has put together a new fiber route connecting cable landing stations along the southeastern US coast. The route connects the company’s northern Virginia depth and its new Raleigh NC PoP with Telxius’ cable landing station in Virginia Beach, and then also stretches all the way south to Jacksonville and Miami where other cables land.

MOX has tapped Ciena to upgrade its lit intercity network on multiple routes across its US footpring. They are deploying the vendor’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme to reach up to 400G, taking aim first at their new and unique Hillsboro-Portland-Seattle Columbus-Ashburn-Atlanta routes. They have also deployed Telescent’s G4 NTM automated interconect system on the former.

RETN has launched a new fiber network route in eastern Europe. The expansion project connects Berlin with Poznan and Warsaw, adding 780km of reach to the company’s pan-European footprint. They are leveraging Infinera’s FlexILS on the route, which is one of their ‘most trafficked’ and directly connects their eastern and western depth.

And Aqua Comms has picked up a 400GE transatlantic contract with ESnet. The DOE’s research network will use that capacity upgrade from 400Gbps to 700Gbps as part of its ‘data ciculatory system’ connecting 50 key destinations including multiple national laboratories, supercomputing facilities, and major scientific instruments as well as interconnecting with other R&E networks. They are preparing for a surge in scientific traffic, in part form CERN in Europe.
