Int’l Bytes: Liquid, RETN, Liberty, Infinera

Several interesting bits of fiber news from around the globe:

Liquid Dataport has officially launched a what it bills as the first terrestrial fiber route between Mombasa and Johannesburg. Data between Kenya and South Africa has mostly taken subsea routes along Africa’s eastern coast. The new route includes a fiber link across the DRC between Goma and Kananga, a region that hasn’t been an easy part of the world to build things over the last few decades.

RETN has invested in a new route in the Balkans. They have completed the second phase of a ring from Budapest, Hungary to Sofia, Bulgaria, passing through Timisoara in Romania. Last year they took the western route between Budapest and Sofia through Belgrade, with the two routes terminating in different datacenters on both ends.

C&W Now has a new name in Latin America. C&W Networks and C&W Business are rebranding together as Liberty Networks, which will be a division of Liberty Latin America. It will focus on serviing carriers, hyper-scalers, and enterprises in Latin America and the Caribbean, investing $250M in the region over the next 5 years.

One of those investments has gone into lighting new routes across Florida with Infinera’s ICE6 800G technology. The solution boosts capacity on Liberty’s Florida Transport Network, which stretches along the state’s east coast from Miami to Jacksonville. The deployment is an expansion of a longstanding existing relationship.

And Thailand has a new Internet Exchange. AMS-IX, HGC, and IGC have partnered up to create AMS-IX Bangkok. The IX will enable better data services for some 250M eyeballs across southeast Asia, and more specifically in the Greater Mekong Subregion.
