Tuesday Bytes: Windstream, DE-CIX, AFR-IX, WIOCC, Ciena

Three more bits of transatlantic and Mediterranean infrastructure news of note:

Windstream Wholesale’s expansion is taking it across the Atlantic now. They have teamed up with Colt and Aqua Comms to deliver 100G wavelengths between the two continents. The arrangement connects Chicago to Germany, reaching London via Aqua Comms’ subsea cable systems and Frankfurt via Colt’s fiber network once there. Historically focused within North America only, Windstream has been taking aim at larger international enterprise customers this year and adding the necessary partners to do it with.

DE-CIX has added both a node and a new partner over in Spain. One year after opening DE-CIX Barcelona, they are teaming up with AFR-IX telecom to add the newly opened Barcelona CLS to their fabric. The facility expects to see the Medusa subsea cable come ashore in 2024, offering connectivity to Mediteranean destinations both in Europe and Africa. DE-CIX operates IXs in the southern European markets of Lisbon, Madrid, Palermo, and Marsielle.

And speaking of southern European infrastructure, WIOCC says it will be the first to light a fiber pair on the Equiano cable as it comes online. Equiano will connect the Portuguese capital of Lisbon with destinations all along the west coast of Africa. WIOCC is leveraging a range of Ciena gear and services to light the fiber pair, and says it will be doing the same with 2Africa.
