Tuesday Bytes: DataBank, Ciena, Hyperco, USTC Corp

A recapitalization, an upgrade project, a data center real estate move, and some M&A worth noting:

DataBank and its owners over at DigitalBridge have announced a significant recapitalization. A consortium of new investors including Swiss Life Asset Management AG and EDF Invest are acquiring a 27% stake in DataBank for $1.2B. The transaction will provide DataBank with the capital to continue its expansion plans in support of edge computing. Additional new members may be added to the consortium prior to completion of the recapitalization in the third quarter of this year.

Ciena has won an interesting contract over in southeast Asia. MSA Resources Sdn Bhd will be using their WL5e coherent optics and MCP domain controller to upgrade its infrastructure in Peninsular Malaysia. The deployment enables 800Gbps and a total network capacity of 33.6Tbps per fiber pair. CommVerge Solutions will act as systems integrator for the project.

The newly created Nordic data center investor Hyperco has made its first inorganic move. They have acquired a 16,900 square meter building at Myllynkivenkuja 4 in Vantaa in the Helsinki metro area for €35m. The location has expansion space for another 6,500 square meters, and Hyperco plans to build a 10-20MW data center on the site. Hyperco plans to expand its Nordic portfolio over the next few years, so we will be seeing them again soon I’m sure.

And there was some M&A in the telecom distributor segment to start off this week. USTC Corp has announced the acquisition of Multicom, a Florida-based manufacturer and full-line stocking distributor. The deal expands USTC’s reach to 13 distribution locations in the US. It follows deals for Walker and Comstar Supply last year. Financial terms were not disclosed. USTC is part of ETC Group, which in turn is backed by Carlyle and soon Cinven.
