FirstLight Buys Fiber from DFT

June 1st, 2020 by · Leave a Comment

FirstLight has found another inorganic way to expand its network in the northeastern USA. Today they announced a definitive agreement to acquire certain fiber assets of DFT Communications.

DFT is a regional telecommunications operator serving the western New York State markets of Dunkirk, Fredonia, Cassadaga, and Jamestown. They are selling only a piece of their infrastructure assets in the region to FirstLight, specifically a fiber route between Hamburg and Jamestown. Hamburg lies just south of Buffalo.

FirstLight will use the purchased fiber to add diversity to its regional network. More specifically, it gives them a third unique route from Buffalo out to markets further east, presumably along a path that follows the Southern Tier Expressway or something roughly parallel to it.

FirstLight’s western NY footprint derives from its acquisitions of Sovernet/ION and Finger Lakes Telecom Group a few years ago.
