Wednesday Bytes: Bandwidth, Ciena, Transmode, Zayo

Time for a quick look at other news from around the industry this week: some cloud help for first responders, two vendor deals, and a financial move in fiber.

BlueLight and Bandwidth are working together to improve campus safety.  BlueLight is using Bandwidth’s App Platform to integrate phone calls and text messaging into its app, improving the data first responders at 911 receive in an emergency with things like GPS.  BlueLight’s app is a part of the system on some 80 campuses around the country.

The Korea-Japan Cable Network is upgrading to 100G.  They’ve picked Ciena’s GeoMesh packet-optical solution, which will boost the theoretical capacity of the cable system by a factor of 15.  KJCN has two repeater-less legs, each spanning some 250km between the two countries, which are perhaps the most densely fiber-rich in the world at this point.

Transmode has won a contract with the global cable giant Liberty Global.  Liberty Global has been deploying their metro 100G platform across its European markets.  They’ve found that Transmode’s gear fits in their existing racks, has low power usage, and is an overall economic solution.  Infinera recently announced a deal to acquire Transmode, although consuming the merger will take some time and still has to get shareholder approval and all that.

And Zayo has done a bit of refinancing.  They’ve extended and upsized their revolving credit facility from $250M to $450M and added on a couple years with provisions for another year beyond that.  Meanwhile, they will be providing Peak Hosting with network connectivity, hooking up 5 locations in the US and Europe in a three year deal.  That includes 30 miles of dark fiber in the SF Bay area and Ethernet and IP connectivity in Ashburn, Dallas, and Amsterdam as well.
