Some unique dark fiber has changed hands up in the Boston metro area. According to a recent announcement, Last Mile Solutions has purchased the dark fiber assets of Forest City Network Solutions.
Forest City’s fiber footprint features a loop up in Cambridge and another in the Longwood medical district over on the other side of the river. It was originally built out to serve the pharmaceutical and medical tenants that Forest City served in its Cambridge development projects. Those two loops are connected by fiber on the more common ‘A’ Loop which runs downtown and hooks it all up to Boston’s major interconnection points.
Last Mile Solutions will be taking that footprint and making it available to carriers and others in need of dedicated pipes, thus offering a boost to the connectivity options available in key Boston-area neighborhoods. They’ll be staying exclusively at the dark fiber level, but with an interest in working with other dark fiber footprints around the region to expand their reach.
Deals like this are a reminder that even with all the consolidation that the sector has gone through, there are still underutilized fiber assets out there to be had if you look hard enough.
