Network Bytes: Uniti, GPC, BIG Fiber, Comcast Business

Four bits of fiber news from around the US:

Uniti Wholesale has gained a new international partner of note. Angola Cables said yesterday that it has signed a strategic partnership with the company, gaining access to Uniti’s national fiber depth. It will pair that with its own subsea cable infrastructure on SACS, MONET, and WACS to expand the company’s reach deep into North America.

Great Plains Communications has made an inorganic move out in Nebraska. They have entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Fastwyre Broadband’s business in the state. Fastwyre’s Nebraska footprint touches both residential and business customers across some two dozen communities. GPC plans to upgrade and invest in that infrastructure while bringing its own extensive regional depth to bear to further expand services.

BIG Fiber has raised $250M to boost its balance sheet and fund new growth. The company has metro fiber in the San Francisco Bay Area, Greater Portland, and Greater Atlanta. The new resources will refinance existing debt and fund new expansion projects, in particular a new multi-market buildout around Greater Atlanta. There they plan to add 205 route miles and 165K fiber miles, giving them some 850 route miles and 3M fiber miles across all markets.

And Comcast Business has highlighted one of its SMB customers out in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They are providing connectivity, managed WiFi, voice, and wireless backup for The Roaming Bean, which has expanded from a mobile cart four years ago to having a permanent storefront in the city’s Strip District earlier this year. The two hosted a community coffee giveaway earlier this week.
