The Start Campus in Portugal has a major new hyperscale partner. None other than Microsoft has announced plans to spend nearly $10B on AI data center infrastructure in the country.
Microsoft says they will be working with Nscale and Start Campus to build out capacity in Sines. That’s about 50 miles from Lisbon and home to a growing confluence of subsea cables, including Ellalink already but soon Medusa and several others.
The campus has been steadily gaining traction as a key node in the infrastructure of southern Europe, offering diversity from the FLAP-D ring where so much investment has already gone over the years. In addition to subsea cable access, Portugal offers affordable space for expansion and the potential for renewable energy, although the latter will take more investment as well if they are to keep up with the current acceleration curve.
Start Campus launched SIN01, its first of six buildings that will eventually total some 1.2GW of capacity on the property earlier this year. Development of SIN02 is currently underway as well with 180MW planned. Microsoft’s $10B will likely help fill a good fraction of that, although details were not given.
