A few interesting bits of vendor news from around the industry:

Nokia has been busy trialing 800G with the Dutch R&E organization SURF. They recently succeeded in setting up an 800Gbps optical connection over 1648km of SURF’s older fiber infrastructure between Amsterdam and Geneva. SURF-network connects not just Dutch research and education institutions but the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland via the LHCOPN network. They are getting ready for the data flows from HL-LHC, which will come online in 2029.

Ciena had a couple of international deals this week for its optical technology. In Canada the independent provider Moby, which is part of Western Fibre Communications, will be using Ciena’s XGS-PON gear to power up to 10Gbps in Calgary. Moby focuses on MDU opportunities.  Meanwhile, in Indonesia, HSPnet has announced the launch of up to 6Tbps of capacity on the B3JS and BDMCS cable systems. The two subsea cables are leveraging Ciena’s WaveLogic AI technology to offer up to 400G wavelength services between key nodes within Indonesia.

Cisco has made an M&A move deeper into cloud native networking and security. They have completed the acquisition of Isovalent. Isovalent’s AI-driven platform will be a key piece of Cisco’s Security Cloud, offering edge protection for cloud workloads. Cisco will continue Isovalent’s support of nextgen open soruce technology like eBPF, Cilium, and Tetragon.

And RtBrick has picked up a partner over in Germany. The regional ISP WOBCOM will be using their routing software along with open switches from UfiSpace to deliver both layer 2 Broadband and layer 3 Ethernet services to customers. WOBCOM serves Wolfsburg and the surrounding area, offering symmetrical 1Gbps to residential users and 100Gbps to businesses. The northern German city of Wolfsburg sits about midway between Hanover and Magdeburg.
