Tuesday Roundup: Neterra, Infinera, TAL, and Xavier Neil

Several items from European operators of note from early this week:

The Eastern European-based provider Neterra is extending its reach into APAC. They have deployed infrastructure in Equinix SG1 in Singapore and established a local subsidiary. That will enable Neterra to offer direct data transfer routes to the region, and also bring its subsidiary NetIX along as well. The new PoP is connected directly to Neterra’s presence in Marseille, presumably via one or more of the major subsea cable options connecting Europe with East Asia via the Red Sea.

Infinera has won another customer over in Europe. Grupo Aire has deployed Infinera’s ICE-X coherent pluggables on its network in Spain and Portugal, which spans some 33,000km route miles of fiber. The upgrade will enable Aire Networks to support 64 wavelengths per fiber, each handling 200Gbps bi-directionally. APFutura helped with the design and deployment.

In the UK, CityFibre’s ecosystem is shifting around a bit. Two of the company’s partners: No One Internet and Link Broadband have partnered with Telecom Acquisitions Limited to bring in new customers. Working with each of the major fiber providers, TAL has been assembling a growing list of brands it does this for.  The retail/wholesale dynamics of the UK FTTH market have been interesting to watch.

And the billionaire telecoms protagonist Xavier Neil is taking aim at a new opportunity in the besieged country of Ukraine. His vehicle NJJ, which has already announced plans to acquire the mobile operator Lifecell, is now taking aim at the fixed telco Datagroup-Volio as well. The plan is to combine the two in preparation for the rebuilding of the country’s infrastructure. Of course, there’s still a war on, but I guess the substantial risks associated with that are the reason for the opportunity.
