Int’l Roundup: Telxius, AMS-IX, Nokia, Ribbon, TPG, Optus

April 30th, 2024 by · Leave a Comment

A bit of subsea, some interconnection, two vendor deals, and some network sharing:

Telxius has expanded the SAm-1 cable to the Dominican Republic port of Punta Cana from Puerto Rico. The submarine cable operator has opened the extension starting April 2024, hooking markets in the Dominican Republic into the broader Caribbean fiber ecosystem with access to Brusa, PCCS, and others.

AMS-IX and Extreme IX have teamed up over in India to leverage the latter’s fabric to interconnect. The deal allows networks to connect to AMS-IX Mumbai without needing an actual physical network connection to an AMS-IX PoP. By leveraging Extreme IX’s footprint the ecosystem will stretch to another 40 locations across 6 cities.

Nokia has a new partner in the Persian Gulf. e& UAE will be using Nokia’s cloud interconnect solution and FP5 technology to hook up hyperscalers in the United Arab Emirates. The upgrade will enable e& UAE to support mission-critical applications delivered across evolved business-class services.

Ribbon has completed a trial of 800G technology with SURF, the Dutch R&E network. The two achieve 2x400GbE transport over a single 800G wavelength on a brownfield 1,650km link between research institutes including Nikhef and CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. The trial put to work Ribbon’s Apollo TM800_2 and Open Optical Line Systems as well as their NPT 2400 metro router.

And down in Australia, TPG Telecom and Optus have signed a network sharing agreement. TPG will gain access to 2,444 Optus mobile network sites, increasing its own coverage by 600,000 square kilometers. Optus will license some of TPG’s spectrum as it continues to roll out 5G. Assuming all goes well on the regulatory front, the Multi-Operator Core Network agreement will start early next year.
