Four bits of data center news, three in North America and one in Europe:
Quantum Loophole’s buildout in Frederick MD now includes its very own nature reserve. The idea is to transform 600 acres into an on-site carbon sink via a reforestation project. They are working with the Global Tree Initiative, the University of Maryland, Frederick County Beekeepers, and others to fortify the natural ecology. The project will help balance the carbon emissions associated with their data center development.
Vantage Data Centers has lined up a green war chest to power its expansion in North America. They have secured a $3B green loan from a bank syndicate with the help of Wells Fargo, TD Securities, Truist, and Scotiabank. The resources will go toward projects totaling some 1.4GW of IT capacity. It’s Vantage’s fifth green loan and follows a $6.4B equity investment from Digital Bridge and Silver Lake a few months ago.
DataBank has teamed up with NYI for better connectivity at their data center at 60 Hudson in Manhattan. The two are working together to make interconnection easier to accomplish once you get into the iconic building. The ecosystem within any carrier hotel can become complicated given the number of players and their different approaches, something the two companies see as an unnecessary barrier to entry for prospective customers.
And AtlasEdge is making an investment in Portugal. They have acquired two sites near Lisbon upon which they plan to build 20MW of data center capacity. The sites are in Carnacide, near the subsea landing at Carcavelos. AtlasEdge says its buildout will be 100% renewable powered and have zero water wastage. They plan further expansions in the Portuguese market, which overall has seen a substantial boost in investment over the past couple of years.
