Some upgrades, some new builds, and some coral reefs:

Ciena picked up two optical wins to and within Australia this week for its WaveLogic 6 technology. Southern Cross is planning to deploy WL6e on the NEXT cable from Sydney to LA, enabling 800Gbps waves and supporting 400GbE services.  Meanwhile, Vocus will be doing the same thing on land in both the metro and longhaul across Australia. In the former Wl6e claims support of up to 1.6Tbps links.

The data center provider maincubes has revealed plans for a further expansion in its home market of Frankfurt. They will be building FRA04 in the Rhine-Main Metropolitan Area, south of Frankfurt in Dietzenbach. It will add 12,500 square meters of whitepace and 40MW of IT capacity. If all goes well it will be operational in 2027, and will be one of several such hyperscale projects.

Macquarie Data Centres has cleared a regulatory hurdle for its expansion plans in Sydney, Australia. The Independent Planning Commission NSW has given them the green light to start on IC3 Super West at their campus in Sydney’s North Zone. It will be ‘Certified Strategic’ by the Australian government, and will support a range of next-gen technologies.

And Orange Business has been busy under the waves with something more than just infrastructure. They have teamed up with Tēnaka to help restore 5,000 square meters of coral reef in a Marine Protected Area of the Coral Triangle in Malaysia. Tēnaka will be leveraging Orange Business’s to modernize its operations and gain access to near real-time monitoring from the reef and AI-powered analysis of the results.
