Lumen Extends Its Edge Across the Atlantic

July 13th, 2022 by · Leave a Comment

Lumen Technologies revealed plans to expand its edge computing platform into Europe yesterday. The investment will give Lumen a greater footprint with which to power applications and other workloads closer to users.

Lumen says it can currently meet 70% of enterprise demand within 5ms in the countries of the core western European nations of the UK, France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. They will be adding additional nodes to that footprint during the second half of 2022. Lumen’s edge solutions include bare metal, network storage, private cloud, and a multi-edge gateway.

Lumen’s European footprint of course derives from the network and colo assets built by Level 3. The company currently has 42K route mile sof fiber connecting 2500 on-net buildings and 540 data centers. The path to edge computing was a bit easier in the US just because the density of colo and other assets was greater to start with, but in Europe they certainly have plenty to hit the ground running with.
