Arelion is Born

January 19th, 2022 by · Leave a Comment

We have a new brand to remember in the world of internet backbones. Telia Carrier has unveiled its new name to be Arelion, putting the cap on its transition from its 30 year run as the international arm of Telia into a fully independent network operator.

Arelion operates some 70,000km of fiber connecting 125 countries, upon which it carries one of the world’s largest internet backbones, AS1299. The company’s footprint spans most of Asia and North America with a few key nodes in Asia as well. They focus on both the wholesale and global enterprise markets.

Telia Carrier was split off from its namesake Telia last summer when Polhem Infra completed its acquisition of the division and took it on an independent path. We interviewed CEO Staffan Göjeryd back in the summer of 2020 about their plans, and the company has continued to invest in its international infrastructure since.

The new brand name was inspired by the names of the stars Aldeberan and Sirius as well as the constellation Orion.
