A new PoP, two vendor deployments, and an M&A:
Telia Carrier has deployed a new PoP on the eastern end of the MAREA submarine cable. They have launched a presence at Telxius’s Derio Communications Hub outside of Bilbao, Spain. The facility combines the functionality of a cable landing station with space for interconnection, much as NJFX does over in New Jersey. Telia Carrier will use its new PoP to take better advantage of the cables landing there, further complementing the company’s other subsea options.
Ciena is helping LG U+ with the latter’s new national backbone network over in South Korea. LG U+ has selected Ciena’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme and WaveLogic Ai coherent optical solutions to power its ROADM backbone, which will include the country’s first 600G long haul wavelengths. LG U+ hopes to not only increase capacity dramatically, but also lower latency, increase diversity, and reduce the necessary repair and maintenance resources.
Infinera has been busy down in South America. The Brazilian operator Softdados has deployed the vendor’s GX and XTM platforms across both its metro and longhaul networks. Softdados serves both enterprises and ISPs across Brazil, and has been experiencing a surge in bandwidth demand as the pandemic shifts traffic patterns. Infinera’s gear gives them a pathway all the way up to 800G in the not-so-distant future. Artisec helped facilitate the deal.
And there was a small bit of interesting M&A in the wireless infrastructure space last week that almost slipped past. Communications Technology Services (CTS) has announced the purchase of Orlando-based ClearSky Technologies. ClearSky specializes in managed private LTE and 5G wireless networks for the enterprises over CBRS spectrum, a product that CTS will fold into its broader portfolio. CTS has deployed some 9,000 DAS systems nationwide, and a move into managed wireless for enterprises seems like a natural extension of that expertise.
