Wednesday Bytes: Zayo, NetIX, Ericsson, Elisa, LOGIX

Two executive hires, one 5G milestone, and a bigger link to Moscow:

Zayo has poached an executive from GTT over in Europe. Jesper Aagaard will be taking over as the company’s Managing Director of Europe, reporting directly to CEO Dan Caruso. Prior to GTT, Aagaard was part of Interoute’s leadership. GTT has been expected to announce the sale of its infrastructure business in Europe, but the end-of-August target date seems to have slipped. Zayo, of course, would be an obvious buyer of those assets if they are ready to return to the M&A circuit in force.

NetIX has upgraded its presence over in Russia according to an announcement this week. The Bulgarian-based global network and interconnection platform has added a second 10G switch within the M9 data center in Moscow, and upgraded its port with the MSK-IX exchange from 2.5G to 10G. The move was driven by growth in traffic across NetIX’s network to and from Russia during the pandemic environment.

Ericsson and Elisa said earlier this week that they have established the first end-to-end 5G Standalone connection in Finland. 5G Standalone promises significantly lower latency for connected devices by using a 5G packet core rather than the LTE packet core that underlies most 5G networks so far. Applications like AR/VR and connected vehicles will need such connections, which can be made six times faster, in order to meet the promises everyone is making for them.

And down in Texas, LOGIX Fiber Networks has hired a new CEO. Craig L. Collins is taking over the top role at the fiber network operator from interim CEO Matt Murphy, who will step back into his chairman of the board role. Craig has served in C-level roles at Intermedia Communications, XO Communications, and TW Cable. LOGIX keeps a fairly low profile, but operates an extensive metro and regional network in Texas and Oklahoma that hooks up 100+ data centers.
