Ciena Prepares for 5G With Upgrades

February 14th, 2018 by · Leave a Comment

Ciena has unvelied new capabilities within its networking portfolio this morning. It’s part of an effort to better serve the growing needs of 4G networks and to prepare for the stresses of 5G.

While 5G won’t get here soon enough to satisfy the hype any more than any other new technology does, it will get here eventually. And when it does, the demands made of fiber networks are destined to change in response. All vendors are therefore trying to get ahead of the curve and put the necessary tools in the hands of network operators now, so we are going to be seeing a lot of this sort of thing.

As you would expect, Ciena’s upgrade takes aim at the twin pillars of scale and automation. They are adding better deterministic packet capabilities, new IP functionality, and programmable network slicing to the company’s converged packet optical and packet networking families. Additionally, they are adding more orchestration and analytics from their Blue Planet software and marshalling additional professional services to the mix as well.

Network operators of all stripes are still figuring out what they really need, and as their needs continue to come into focus we will see Ciena and its competitors continue to fine tune things in response.
