Telia Expands EdgeConneX Partnership, Adds Edge Reach

July 11th, 2017 by · Leave a Comment

EdgeConneX and Telia Carrier are expanding their relationship in a big way this summer.  Telia is expanding its Tier 1 IP backbone to EdgeConneX’s entire edge data center footprint.

They were already in Detroit, Santa Clara, and Portland.  Things must have gone well, because they are building out another 27 edge data centers in 24 markets.  The first wave will include Boston, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Phoenix, and Amsterdam over the next several months, and the rest will come online over the balance of this year.  EdgeConneX has other expansion sites in the works that will also probably be on that list.

We have seen content providers and last mile operators adding interconnection points at the edge at a prodigious rate in recent years.  But it has been less common to see the big IP backbones eagerly jump on the bandwagon.  However, the latency advantages, interconnection opportunities, and the growing gravitational bandwidth tug of this kind of infrastructure has made it a necessary piece of the puzzle.

For its part, Telia has been steadily adding depth to its US network for a few years now.  Increasing their presence at the edge via partnerships like this one is entirely consistent with that strategic direction.  No doubt we will continue to hear about similar efforts, albeit in smaller chunks.
