Akamai Adds More Security, Buys Cyberfend

December 19th, 2016 by · Leave a Comment

Akamai has made an inorganic move to expand its security services portfolio this morning.  The CDN and cloud services provider has announced the acquisition of Silicon-Valley-based Cyberfend.

Cyberfend specializes in the detection of bots and other automation that are often used to test and use stolen credentials around the internet.  That’s a never-ending arms race of course, as attackers constantly adapt their efforts to avoid such detection.  Cyberfend’s Bot Manager uses machine-learning to help with detection in real time, picking out the nefarious attempts from normal commercial activity.

Akamai hopes to leverage their technology and talent to offer better defense to its customer base, and will of course bring it’s global reach and scale to the table.  Details of the all-cash transaction were not disclosed, but this one isn’t about the short term numbers but about bringing new talent and capabilities in-house.
