WOW Business Lands in Downtown Chicago

April 11th, 2016 by · Leave a Comment

Early in 2015, WOW! Business announced the purchase of conduit along Wacker Drive in downtown Chicago.  Today they revealed just what they have been and will be doing with it.
ScreenHunter_32 Apr. 11 11.53WOW! has pulled fiber through that conduit in the first phase of a significant expansion into the city’s central business district.  The first five buildings are already on-net, including Hartford Plaza North, Hartford Plaza South, 303 West Madison, 1 East Wacker Drive, and of course the Willis Tower.  That last one is the building we used to call the Sears Tower when it was the tallest building in the USA for many years, and it’s not any shorter today of course. The rest of the build-out will take place over the next 5 quarters or so, bringing an additional 33 buildings on-net.  WOW! Business has long had a presence in the Chicago metro area, but primarily in the surrounding communities alongside their cable franchise territories and not so much downtown, as you can see from the snapshot of their fiber map to the left.  With a central business district ring in place, they should be better placed to win more regional, multi-site enterprise fiber deals going forward.
