Equinix Brings Southern Cross Into Sydney IBX

September 27th, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Various reports say that Equinix (NASDAQ:EQIX, news, filings) is now housing a direct link to the Southern Cross Cable Network. The direct connectivity makes it easy for customers to connect from SY1 to its Seattle IBXs, amongst others. The proximity to SCCN was crucial to Equinix’s choice of location when entering Australia.

Southern Cross has to be feeling more relaxed these days as compared to last year when Pacific Fibre had been vocally planning a competing cable, winning some early converts and picking a few verbal fights. But with the funding on that effort falling through, Southern Cross now has an upgraded system and not much direct competition for connectivity to the US west coast.

The connection to Southern Cross gives Equinix 111 networks at SY1 now.  Meanwhile, the data center giant is still working on its expansion down under, with phase two of its SY-3 facility scheduled to be opened in the coming quarter, and is planning to become a REIT in a few years.
