NTT Rides Bandwidth Demand to Italy

July 3rd, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

NTT Communications (NYSE:NTT, news, filings) is continuing to build out its European network presence. Today they extended their Tier-1 IP network southward into the city of Milan in Italy in response to customer demand.

Milan is the biggest bandwidth hub in Italy of course, and one of the first stops for any Tier 1 global network south of the Alps. NTT will be working with Infracom, placing its PoP in their Milan data center complex.

NTT’s network has always been weighted heavily towards Asia and the US and the transpacific links in between. But lately they have been boosting their European presence substantially.

Last year, NTT expanded its presence in the Benelux region and in Eastern Europe, adding nodes in Amsterdam, Brussels, Bucharest, Budapest, and Sofia.  If one were to try to guess their next move, I’d say Stockholm looks likely, or maybe Marseilles to meet the submarine cables there.
