Vint Cerf on 2020

June 9th, 2010 by · 2 Comments

Back in April, I posted about the 2020 Project, in which the Swedish telecommunications giant sponsored a group of videos featuring the thoughts of select thinkers about how communications would change the world over the next decade.  Well, the latest video is of none other than Vint Cerf, who should need no introduction to readers of this blog – except perhaps those few that still think Al Gore invented the internet.  With no further ado:

The direct link is here, from which you can alternatively download an HD version of over 70Mb and remind your ISP that they need to add some backhaul capacity.   That download works really well even from Asia, they must be using a pretty good CDN.  There are many other interesting videos that have made it onto that site as well since the last time I checked – they add one each week.

If you haven't already, please take our Reader Survey! Just 3 questions to help us better understand who is reading Telecom Ramblings so we can serve you better!

Al Gore invented the internet? When I told Dr. Kleinrock that I was happy to hear that Al Gore didn’t invent the internet as part of his historical presentation on the internet’s creation, he was most careful and respectful not to disrespect Big Al. He stated that without Mr. Gore in the halls of Congress, the internet as we know it wouldn’t be here.

As for Mr. Cerf’s involvement, Dr. K said, yes, he was here working with us in the 70’s and remains an absolute pioneer behind the internet’s development.

If it’s Youtube, the CDN is mostly Google proprietary. They use Akamai for live events at the moment, except when that melts under load (eg the IPL recently) and then they use Tata/Bitgravity.
