Level 3 Takes On Texas, Olympics

February 26th, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Level 3 Communications (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings) had a pair of announcements in the past few days.  Yesterday they revealed their role in delivering the Vancouver Winter Olympics for France Télévisions both to the web and to the iPhone.  Level 3’s CDN business continues to demonstrate strength in Europe where they have greater advantages – especially over the smaller providers.  The service has been managed out of the Level 3 broadcast operations center in Dublin – I didn’t know they had one of those in Dublin, but I suppose it must have come along with the Servecast acquisition.

And this morning, Level 3 announced the next leg in its local markets initiative – this time in South Texas.  That means Houston and Austin for now, rather than in the cities further south where they have a less substantial metro presence.  Level 3 has a big presence in Houston with lots of on-net buildings, but in Austin while they have quite a bit of fiber they have far fewer buildings on-net.  They will no doubt be looking to change that.
