Metro News, Texas Fiber Maps, and a Statistics Update on the Way

December 2nd, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

I have added another group of metro fiber maps to my collection, this time focusing on Texas.  Like Florida, Texas has many large cities, but the same companies tend to show up in most of them and therefore it is convenient to treat them as a group.  I’m sure I’m missing a few still, but it’s a start.  Additionally, this month I will be updating and enhancing my metro fiber provider and on-net buildings list, and will be looking at the changes we’ve seen since last year’s update.  For companies with public data on this either in sec filings or on their corporate websites, don’t worry I’ll find it.  For others who don’t or aren’t on the list and think they should be, just send me a note.

In other news in the metro fiber space, northeastern metro and regional fiber provider Lightower has announced an expansion at its 60 Hudson St in New York City, adding 1600 square feet of carrier class space.  After running in silent mode for a time while consolidating the networks from which the company was assembled, Lightower has been making more and more noise lately.  They should continue to be interesting to watch in 2010, and should the M&A bandwagon get started again their assets would be a puzzle piece that would fit well with many others.

And speaking of the M&A department, last week Arialink acquired metro network facilities from Waypoint Telecommunications in its main market of Lansing, Michigan.  Arialink is a new one to me, but this apparently brings their Lansing area metro fiber to 400 route miles, with 1000 state wide.  I’ll have to keep an eye out for them in the future.  Waypoint I am only vaguely familiar with, but since they have metro network in various markets outside of Michigan, I assume they are still around and just selling off their Lansing assets.  But first hand information would be welcome if anyone has it.
