TeliaSonera To Deliver EarthRise

February 14th, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

TeliaSonera AB (ETR:TLS, news, filings) International Carrier announced another gaming win this morning.  The company’s managed data center services were selected by Masthead Studios to deliver the new Earthrise MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing game).  The package includes IP connectivity, colo, leased servers and management in TeliaSonera’s New York data center, as opposed to the carrier’s usual European haunts.  It’s an interesting strategy, choosing the US assets of a European-based carrier in order to get the best of both worlds, as it were.

Masthead is a Bulgarian-based game studio that I’m not familiar with, but from what I’ve seen of Earthrise it looks like a pretty good effort – it went live this month.  I always look greedily at games like this, until the reality of life intrudes.  When I was young I had the time but the technology wasn’t ready.  Now the technology is here, but I simply don’t have the time to play them.  Guess I’ll have to leave the fun to the kids.

The other IP backbone that has been winning deal after deal in the gaming space is of course Level 3, and they certainly had to have bid for it.  It doesn’t seem to include CDN services though, or if it does then TeliaSonera didn’t win that part and we will hear more from whoever won that before long.
