Metro Bytes: American Tower, GPC, Comcast, Deep Blue

A few bits of metro-focused news to catch up on before heading to the beach, assuming that’s a thing this year during the pandemic that is (whether it should be or not).

American Tower has made a small acquisition down in Atlanta. They have acquired the colocation space of Cyber Wurx in a deal that further expands the company’s presence within 55 Marietta by another 17k square feet. The deal gives them a total of four floors and 6MW of capacity within the facility that they entered with the purchase of Colo Atl a while back. Cyber Wurx itself will stay on as an anchor tenant within the space.

Great Plains Communications is taking its fiber proposition to the Nebraska towns of Blair and Valley. The Midwestern operator is building out fiber to both homes and businesses in both cities, which lie north and west of Omaha, respectively. The buildout will bring up to 10Gbps, Ethernet, cloud connectivity, WiFi, and voice services to residents and businesses.

Comcast Business has picked up a municipal contract down in Richmond, Texas. The city is leveraging Comcast’s Ethernet, VoIP, and internet services to upgrade the capabilities of its workforce. That includes the police and fire departments, city hall, public works facilities, and all the remote worforce requirements. Richmond lies just southwest of Houston.

And Comcast’s Deep Blue Communications subsidiary picked up some business in the hospitality sector during the height of the pandemic. The Century House, an upscale hotel and event space in upstate New York, used the company’s wireless connectivity services to extend its coverage to an open-air outdoor venue, i.e. a giant outdoor, ventilated tent. The Century House leveraged the technology for 20+ events last season, and is continuing this year.
