Metro Bytes: FirstLight, GreenLight, DF&I

Three interesting bits of fiber news from three metro areas in the eastern and northeastern US:

FirstLight Fiber is bringing the cloud to another customer in northern/central New Hampshire. Lakes Region Community Services will be leveraging FirstLight’s fiber and internet services to reach the cloud and thus better serve the individuals and families it supports across the region. LRCS has a primary focus on those affected by developmental disabilities and/or acquired brain disorders, serving residents of Belknap and Grafton counties.

Greenlight Networks has announced plans to deploy Nokia’s XGS-PON technology, upgrading its FTTH network from PON to XGS-PON. Leveraging the new gear, Greenlight will be offering symmetrical bandwith up to 10Gbps to customers across the Rochester NY metro area. The regional ISP was recently purchased by an entity of billionaire Thomas Golisano, hopefully giving it the necessary financial wherewithal grow and meet demand.

And DF&I has made good on its plans to buy the fiber and conduit assets of USA Fiber down in the DC metro area. The company has also recently executed an agreement with Maryland a new Potomac river crossing. That crossing is a part of the company’s ‘Express Route’ project linking Ashburn with Baltimore via a new and diverse route.  Now the company can turn its attention toward the buildout itself, and we will get to see just what they have in mind.
