Lightpath Takes On Some Midwest Longhaul

May 14th, 2026 by · Leave a Comment

The continued expansion of Lightpath is now taking the company beyond its metro roots and into the longhaul fiber business. The New York-based fiber builder and operator has announced plans to build out a new diverse route between Columbus, Ohio and Chicago, Illinois.

The total route will span 392 miles across three states. On the Columbus end, they will leverage assets they already have in the ground from their expansion around that metro area. Then heading west they will build out 327 miles of new, underground, multiconduit fiber infrastructure. Within that they will pull 864-count fiber, and along the way there will be seven new LightCube edge facilities.

It’s not Lightpath’s first longhaul asset of course, as they picked up the UFD infrastructure between NYC and Ashburn via acquisition a couple years ago. This new project is opportunistic, with an anchor customer in tow making the investmest decision much easier. It’s a safe bet they’ll be looking for other opportunities to connect up their metro depth over time.

The project will be delivered in phases and should be ready for service by the end of 2028. The first segment to be delivered will be between South Bend and Columbus.
