There was a bit of FTTx consolidation news on Friday on the east coast. IQ Fiber has announced an agreement to acquire ThinkBig Networks in a move that will take it northward into the state of Maryland.
IQ Fiber is based in Jacksonville FL and operates fiber networks in Jacksonville, Gainesville and Alachua County FL with construction underway in Savannah GA as well. ThinkBig Networks, meanwhile, operates a footprint within the Maryland counties of Charles, Kent, Queen Anne’s and Harford on both sides of the Chesapeake Bay.
The deal will be funded by additional equity funding from SDC Capital Partners, which bought a majority stake in IQ Fiber back in 2021 and invested another $150M last year. This new investment suggests SDC might see IQ Fiber as a potential platform for further consolidation. The FTTx marketplace has been largely driven by local and regional considerations, but may be entering a new phase soon.
The deal is expected to close sometime in the next few months.
