Four more expansion and upgrade items for infrastructure around the world:

Vantage Data Centers has broken ground on a new hyperscale campus in Japan. KIX1 is a greenfield project located in Ibaraki, Osaka that will eventually host two data centers with seismic base-isolation structures totalling 485,000 square feet of space and 68MW of capacity. The first facility and 28MW of IT load is expected to be ready in early 2026.

Bulk Infrastructure is expanding the Oslo Internet Exchange. They are adding three new data halls and 5.5MW of power to the data center, more than doubling its current capacity. The expansion is expected to be ready for service in the first quarter of 2024, with a portion already sold to customers. Bulk is also in the middle of an expansion of its N01 campus in Kristiansand.

Sparkle’s BlueMed now officially connects to Crete. The subsea cable has landed in Chania on the northwestern coast of the Greek island. BlueMed has 4 fiber pairs capable of 25Tbps each starting in Genoa, connecting to Palermo on the island of Sicily and now to Crete and later this year to Aqaba in Jordan. Sparkle’s data center in Chania will also eventually connect to their GreenMed cable system as well.

Nokia announced progress on a couple of fronts this week. In the US they have completed the acquisition of Fenix Group, a specialist in defense communications. The deal puts Nokia in a position to compete for a bigger slice of the federal spending pie. And in the Netherlands, Nokia has won a partnership with the data center solutions and cloud services provider Netrouting. Nokia’s IP and optical solutions will power NetRouting’s network infrastructure including data center interconnect to seven other data centers.
