Euro Bytes: maincubes, DCspine, Infinera, Virgin, Viavi, Openreach, AMS-IX, NetIX

Another day, another four bits of interesting news from over in Europe, with two from the Netherlands and two from the UK:

The data center operator maincubes has a new network tenant at its AMS01 facility in Schiphol-Rijk outside of Amsterdam. DCspine has hooked up the facility to its 100Gbps network backbone in response to increased demand. DCspine connects 75+ data centers in the Netherlands and Belgium via its software-defined, automated platform.

Not far away, NetIX says that it has upgraded its connection to AMS-IX in Amsterdam to 100GE. The move comes in response to traffic growth on NetIX’s own infrastructure of over 350Gbps since COVID-19 began. NetIX’s footprint now connects 150 data centers across 35 countries and serves some 180 members.

Virgin Media is taking Infinera’s XRoptics technology for a spin over in the UK. They have installed the prototype equipment on their Reading network for a trial in support of up to 400Gbps symmetrical services over its PON infrastructure. Traditional network transceivers were replaced with XR optics that split one fiber connection into many, enabling multi-gigabit speeds to many customers simultaneously.

And also in the UK, VIAVI has picked up a contract with Openreach. Openreach has selected their Optical Network Monitoring System to accelerate its fiber deployment across the country. They’ll use it for certfication as they build out, perform pre-activation checks, and monitor ongoing service remotely. Openreach expects to reach 4.5M premises with FTTP by the end of this month and is adding 42K premises each week.
