Juniper to Acquire Mist

March 5th, 2019 by · Leave a Comment

Juniper Networks has found itself a spring acquisition target. The routing and network software vendor has announced its intent to acquire Mist Systems.

Mist’s specialty is melding artificial intelligence with cloud-managed wireless networks. The idea is to improve wireless LAN systems by letting AI handle the automation decisions to keep WiFi systems optimized and reliable.

Juniper plans to take those capactilities and merge them with their LAN, SD-WAN, and security solutions. The result will hopefully expand the company’s cloud-managed networking portfolio in powerful new ways. The rise of SDN is creating the necessary tools that AI-based systems can use to actually manage networks in real time.

The purchase will cost Juniper $405M in cash and the assumption of outstanding equity awards. They plan to close the deal, assuming all goes well, in Juniper’s fiscal Q2.
