Int’l Bytes: Sparkle, NEC, Toyota Tsusho, Airtel, IX Reach

A few news bytes on expansions, rollouts, and mergers on the international front:

Sparkle, the international arm of TIM Group, has added another market to its Latin American footprint. The network operator has opened a new poP in Bogotá, Colombia, taking up residence with Equinix there. The expansion complements a recent expansion to Cartagena, adding reach to the company's Seabone transit network.

NEC and Toyota Tsusho have lined up network job in central Asia. The two Japanese giants have teamed up to expand and upgrade the national infrastructure of Uzbekistan for the state-owned Uzbektelecom JSC. The project is expected to be completed this year, leveraging DWDM for greater capacity and microwave radios for backup. NEC will be providing gear, while Toyota Tshusho will coordinate things as the main contractor.

In India, Bharti Airtel and Tata Teleservices may be facing a hiccup in their merger plans. India's Department of Telecom is said to be preparing a demand for payment of unpaid license fees, spectrum usage charges, and a one-time spectrum reallocation charge before they'll let the deal pass. Sounds reasonable, except for the price tag of 120B rupees, which works out to about $2.15B. They'll be working out the actual number in court, as usual. Only in India...

And IX Reach continued its quest to reclaim its place on the international SDN cloud connectivity scene after the Console years. Today they unveiled a newly upgraded portal for their SDN platform that offers on-demand cloud connectivity into Amazon AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. IX Reach has been steadily adding both breadth and capacity to the global interconnection network itself.
