Int’l Bytes: RETN, NGD, NGA, Nokia

November 8th, 2018 by · Leave a Comment

Three items of interest from west to east across Eurasia:

RETN has been busy in northeastern Europe. Today they announced the launch of a new high speed fiber route between Moscow, Russia and Riga, Latvia. The new 100G route adds diversity to RETN’s footprint with 12ms latency across 1195km. The new infrstructure is lit with Infinera’s FlexILS gear.

The UK has a bit more fiber that doesn’t have to do with London this week. The data center provider NGD has teamed up with Nextgenaccess (NGA) to build a new 80km fiber route between the City of Bristol in England and it’s data center in Newport, Wales. The route includes a 5km stretch across the Severn Bridge. NGD’s Newport facility spans 750,000 square feet of total space with room for 22,000 racks.

And Nokia continued to develop its inroads into the Chinese marketplace across a broad front. They have signed a frame agreement with each of China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom. Under those deals Nokia will be deploying technology anbd services in support of both fixed and mobile broadband, helping bring 5G into focus. The deals potentially add up to over €2B.
