Comcast Business Expands Philly Fiber Reach

November 17th, 2016 by · Leave a Comment

Comcast Business has big fiber plans for Philadelphia. The business services division of the cable giant announced yesterday that it is pouring some $30M into an expansion and upgrade of its fiber depth in the city.

As part of the buildout, Comcast Business is in the process of deploying more than 50 miles of new fiberoptic cable across the Center City and University City areas. That will add to the 25 miles of network plant they put in place in southern Philadelphia in and around the Wells Fargo Center to support the Democratic National Convention with 100G.

Comcast Business will be using its deeper fiber infrastructure to target the enterprise community with MEF-certified Carrier Ethernet services, both 1.0 and 2.0. They’ve been growing that business at a rapid clip over the last few years alongside their fellow cable operators.  As a whole, Comcast has 145,000 route miles of fiber nationwide with 125,000 on-net nodes.
