Int’l Roundup: Hibernia, Sparkle, GlobeNet, NTT, Telia

With ITW underway, there’s lots of news this morning from the international front.  Here’s a quick look at a few:

On the transatlantic front, Hibernia Networks has added protected wavelength services to its portfolio. They’re leveraging their three transatlantic routes, of which the new ultra-low-latency Hibernia Express is now the flagship, and offering the protected service at 10Gbps today with plans for 100Gbps in the future. Now that they are done building Express and are busy monetizing it, I’m curious to see what the next construction project for Hibernia might be.

In the Mediterranean, Sparkle, the international arm of Telecom Italia, has been awarded NOC and network administrator responsibilities for SEA-ME-WE-5. The new 3 fiber pair cable has a landing in Sicily of course, where Sparkle has been quite actively preparing interconnection and other infrastructure. They’ve also got a new global rebranding campaign underway this week over at ITW, which I unfortunately was unable to attend once again this year.

GlobeNet has revealed a capacity upgrade on its routes between North and South America. They are now selling 100Gbps wavelength services between the US markets of US and Miami and the Brazilian markets of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo. That’s just in time for the Olympic Games this summer of course, and also positions the company to compete with the new cables under construction that they may have to share the route with soon.

NTT has a new partner over in the Middle East. Omantel and the Japanese giant have agreed to collaborate on wholesale IP services. The arrangement will give NTT greater reach into the markets of the Persian Gulf and offer OmanTel easier access to points around the world.

Telia Carrier picked up a new IP transit customer this week. Phonoscope Global has selected their internet backbone to serve the regional and global needs of its customers, many of whom derive from the oil and gas sector in the company’s Houston metro area home turf. Telia’s IP backbone has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, as has its US fiber infrastructure.
