Zayo added another anchor customer for its fiber buildout plans in the Dallas/Fort Worth metro area yesterday. The City of Fort Worth has awarded the company a 12 year, $15.6M contract to upgrade its municipal network infrastructure.
Zayo will supply the city with a dark fiber network spanning 411 route miles that will include a diverse core ring and some 64 laterals to some 50 outlying facilities. Along with its ongoing 2,000 mile fiber-to-the-tower buildout in the Dallas metro area as a whole, Zayo clearly has a whole lot going on in Texas.
Zayo first entered Texas when it purchased AboveNet, and I’ve always thought it might further expand its footprint in the state by inorganic means, for example by buying Alpheus or FiberLight. Those possibilities remain of course, but Zayo’s expansion in the Lone Star state has been mostly organic since.
Construction has already begun on the first phase of what will be a two year project, connecting six core locations by summer.
