Ciena Unveils Major Upgrade to Blue Planet

October 13th, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

It was just two months ago that Ciena closed its purchase of Cyan, and today we are seeing a piece of just what they had in mind. They have unveiled a suite of enhancements to the Blue Planet network orchestration platform, which has become a centerpiece of the company’s SDN and NFV push.

They have reformulated the platform by shifting Docker container system, enabling TOSCA-based templating and support for business process model and notation standards, and generally improving its ability to work with non-Ciena domains.  Basically, they’re enabling their service provider customers to leverage DevOps and customize whatever they want to customize as fast as they want to customize it.

Ciena’s Agility efforts were already on this sort of path for SDN and NFV, as we learned in this Industry Spotlight in early 2015.  But by purchasing Cyan they have leapfrogged ahead and brought on new talent, all while harnessing what had been a competing platform.  At least that was the plan; we’ll have to watch for a while to see how the story unfolds.

Most of what went into this upgrade was already in the pipeline at Cyan.  They still have things from the Ciena Agility side to merge in over time.  I imagine they are still figuring out just what the next moves will be, especially given how rapidly SDN and NFV are evolving as applied in real networks.
