Level 3 Communications significantly expanded its efforts in the managed security arena this morning. They've introduced a new DDoS mitigation service that takes advantage of both the company's vast network scale and distributed CDN infrastructure.
Along with their network-level viewpoint, 4.5Tbps of attack-ingest capacity and traffic scrubbing centers around the world, they hope to take an integrated security approach capable of not just blocking attacks, but predicting them via heavy duty analytics. That last part will be some trick, although I suspect what they mean by prediction is more of an early symptom detection thing than a 5-day weather forecast of hacker psychology.
Level 3 is of course quite busy integrating tw telecom in the USA, but this service is more of a global IP backbone thing that both they and the former Global Crossing were good at. Level 3 is looking to take a bigger slice of the global enterprise market from the big boys, and this sort of managed security offering is a big part of those plans.
